The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League started off with a bang, with records that nobody expected to be broken smashed through not once, but twice. In just two match day weeks, the Royal Challengers Bangalore's 10-year-old record for the highest team total in an innings was broken twice. SRH put up 277 runs against the Mumbai Indians. Then, just a week later, the Kolkata Knight Riders scored 272 in their 20 overs, with both teams now owning the record for the first and second place on the list if the highest score in IPL history.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 277/3 vs Mumbai Indians

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) put up an exceptional batting show, scoring a huge total of 277 runs in 20 overs, the highest score in IPL history, against Mumbai Indians (MI). Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen went all guns blazing and pelted the MI bowlers all around the ground. MI won the toss and chose to field first. Travis Head started off strongly, reaching his fifty in just 18 balls and eventually scoring 62 runs off 24 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes. Abhishek Sharma followed suit, hitting a quick fifty in 16 balls and making 63 runs off 23 balls, including 3 fours and 7 sixes. Heinrich Klaasen then took charge, smashing 80 runs off 34 balls with 4 fours and 7 sixes, while Aiden Markram played a steady innings, contributing 42 runs and partnering with Klaasen for a crucial 116-run stand.

Kolkata Knight Riders: 272/7 vs Delhi Capitals

Gautam Gambhir returned to the Kolkata Knight Riders as their coach and the KKR team started playing their hard hitting style of cricket again. Sunil Narine, known for his insane pinch hitting ability, was promoted to open the batting for the 2024 IPL edition. In the KKR vs Delhi Capitals match, this move worked wonders for them, and Sunil Narine became a menace with the bat, scoring a blazing fast 85 of 39 deliveries. Youngster Angkrish Raguvanshi and then Andre Russell helped Kolkata continue the charge and took KKR’s score to 272 runs, just 5 runs short of the highest score in IPL history. Delhi lost early wickets and never looked in confident in the chase, Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubb both got to their half centuries but couldn’t make much impact, with Delhi losing by 106 runs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 263/5 vs Pune Warriors India

In the 2013 IPL, Universe Boss Chris Gayle brought a Gayle Storm to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru and showed the highest level of clean power hitting. and. Stepping onto the batting friendly Chinnaswamy pitch against the Pune Warriors India, he unleashed a storm, smashing the fastest T20 century ever. His bat seemed to have wings as he blazed through the first 50 runs in just 17 balls. But he wasn't satisfied, adding the next 50 runs in a mere 13 balls. But the fun didn't stop there. Gayle seemed destined for a double century, teasing the crowd with his insane hitting ability. Though he slowed down a tad towards the end, he finished unbeaten on a staggering 175 runs off just 66 balls, Chris Gayle’s highest score in the IPL ever, also the highest individual score in the IPL. 

Supporting Gayle's blitzkrieg was AB de Villiers, who chipped in with a quickfire cameo of 31 runs off 8 balls. Their partnership propelled RCB to their highest score in IPL history, 263 runs in 20 overs. PWI, on the receiving end, could only manage to score 133 for 9 in their 20 overs, falling short by a whopping 130 runs.

Lucknow Super Giants: 257/5 vs Punjab Kings

In the clash between the Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings during the 2023 IPL, LSG turned the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the home ground of Punjab, into their own batting paradise. Led by Kyle Mayers' explosive start, they set the stage on fire with a rapid-fire 257/5 in their 20 overs, the highest score in IPL 2023. Mayers' blasted 54 runs off 24 balls, followed by Marcus Stoinis' power-packed 72 off 40 deliveries. Nicholas Pooran then joined the party with a whirlwind cameo, adding a quickfire 45 off just 19 balls. In response, Punjab’s effort to score 201 runs wasn’t enough and they lost the match by 56 runs. 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 248/3 vs Gujarat Lions

2016 IPL can only be remembered for one player, and that is Virat Kohli. On the peak form of his career, Virat Kohli had already smashed 2 centuries in that season of the IPL, but carrying RCB’s pursuit of the IPL trophy, he had to keep going. Facing the Gujarat Lions, the team against which he smashed his first ever IPL century, Kohli showed his class and turned up on his level best yet again. Despite a shaky start and losing Gayle early, Kohli and ABD unleashed havoc on the Gujarat Lions.

Kohli's innings was a tale of patience turned into power, starting off slow but then going berserk, ending up with 109 off 55 balls. Meanwhile, ABD unleashed pure aggression, storming to an unbeaten 129 off just 52 deliveries. Their partnership of 229 runs took RCB’s total to 248 runs after 20 overs, one of the highest scored in IPL history. Gujarat Lions stood no chance and lost by a colossal 144-run margin.

Chennai Super Kings: 246/5 vs Rajasthan Royals

Chennai Super Kings had an inconsistent start to the 2010 IPL season, but on one match day, Murali Vijay made everything look very easy with the bat. In the match between Chennai Super Kings vs Rajasthan Royal, Murali Vijay smashed an explosive 127 runs off just 56 deliveries. Partnering up with Albie Morkel, who scored 62 off 34 balls, the men in yellow set a mammoth total of 246 runs in 20 overs, CSK’s highest score in the IPL and one of the highest totals ever. Rajasthan showed heart in the run chase, but fell short of 23 runs. 

Mumbai Indians: 246/5 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

Mumbai Indians are one of the best team in IPL history, and they are there because of the mentality of the players in the team. When Mumbai Indians, under captain Hardik Pandya, got hit for 277 runs by the Sunrisers Hyderabad during 2024 IPL season, they showed that they'd be down, but never out. Started started off the chase brilliantly, with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma firing up at the top. Halfway through the chase, MI was at par with the required rate and victory was not that far. Had it not been for SRH captain, Pat Cummins bowling and leadership, MI could have chased down the highest score in IPL history. They ended up at 246 runs in 20 overs, just 31 shy of the target, setting their highest team score in IPL history and the 5th overall.

Kolkata Knight Riders: 245/6 vs Punjab Kings

In in the 2018 IPL clash between KKR and KXIP, Kolkata Knight Riders smashed a big total of 245/6 against Kings XI Punjab. Sunil Narine scored 75 runs quickly in just 36 balls, and Dinesh Karthik made a quickfire 50 runs in just 23 balls. This made KKR's total the eighth-highest ever in IPL history. Even though Kings XI Punjab, led by KL Rahul's 66 runs, tried hard to chase the target, it was just too much for them to achieve.

Chennai Super Kings: 240/5 vs Punjab Kings

In a thrilling encounter between the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, CSK, led by Australian star Michael Hussey, showcased an impressive batting performance. Hussey's unbeaten score of 116, supported by a great contribution from Suresh Raina, propelled Chennai to a winning total of 240/5. This marked the ninth-highest team score in IPL history. Despite Punjab’s huge effort, the target proved too difficult to overcome, as they ended their innings at 207/4.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 235/1 vs Mumbai Indians

It was all AB de Villiers in the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Mumbai Indians matchup at the Wankhede Stadium in 2015. ABD, along with Virat Kohli, smashed MI for a total score of 235/1, which was the tenth-highest team score in IPL history. De Villiers scored a magnificent 133 runs, while Kohli contributed 82 runs. Their partnership of 215 runs set a T20 record and showed the synergy between true friends on the pitch, ABD and Virat. Although Mumbai tried hard to chase the target, they couldn't quite catch up, falling short of 39 runs.
