Nathan Lyon: The spin wizard of Australia
Their are two kinds of spinners in cricket. One are the finger spinners, who use finger to deliver the ball. The other are the wrist spinners, they use wrists to turn the ball. Both these kinds of bowlers have different traits but it’s the wrist spinners who have greater ability to spin the ball.
Today, in this article by ZAP cricket, we will talk about one of the best finger spinners in the world- Nathan Lyon aka Garry. He is a right arm off spin bowler and lower order batsman from Australia. His records speak volumes about his craft as he is the most successful off spinner from Australia in test cricket. He surpassed the record of Hugh Trumble of 141 wickets in 2015.
Early life and domestic cricket of Nathan Lyon
Born on 20 November, 1987 (present age 37 years), Lyon played domestic cricket for South Australia and New South Wales. His journey was quite hard initially as he used to work as a ground staff at the Adelaide Oval. However, with his grit and determination, he made to the domestic teams and subsequently to the national team. In 2010, he played for South Australia in Sheffield Shield. With his impressive bowling figures there, he was selected in Australia A team for a series against Zimbabwe in the same year. Then also, he took maximum wickets and eventually became ‘man of the series’.
Presently, he is the premier bowler of Australia’s Test team. Other than that, he plays County cricket as well. He was signed by Worcestershire in 2017 and Lancashire County Cricket Club in 2023.
International career of Nathan Lyon
Nathan Lyon made his test debut on 31 August 2011 vs Sri Lanka, ODI debut on 8 March 2012 vs Sri Lanka and T20I debut on 29 January, 2016 vs India. He specialises in bowling long spells in red ball cricket and that too with consistency and incomparable accuracy. His bowling action is very smooth and the way he sets up a batsman is commendable.
Over the years Lyon has been the core of Australia’s bowling line up in test cricket. He was in squad that won the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final and in fact was one of the architects of the victory.
Nathan Lyon is often compared with the Indian spinner- Ravichandran Ashwin. The career trajectory of both the players has been different and they both are special in their own way. Ashwin, on one hand is a three format player, Lyon on the other hand is restricted to one format. In 105 matches, Ashwin has taken 536 wickets and in 130 matches, Nathan’s tally is at 532. However, one thing that shall be noted is that Ashwin has played majority of his cricket in subcontinent, that is, in spin friendly conditions, but Lyon has played most of the matches on pace friendly tracks. Hence, both these GOATs are exemplary in their own way.
