SKY high expectations: The Unconventional Leader
After the triumph of 2024 T20 World Cup, the three stalwarts of the team- Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadega retired. This meant that the national selectors had to look for someone who could not only lead the team, but also, someone who could operate as smartly as Rohit Sharma did. Speculations were there that after Hardik Pandya’s success as Gujarat Titans’ skipper, he could be the next in charge. But, after a great retrospection, Suryakumar Yadav was assigned with the new role of leading the team. He is undoubtedly the best batsman in shortest format but his credentials as a skipper still had to be litmus tested.

Since his promotion, he has led the team in 5 international series and here is the record of each one of them:
- India vs Sri Lanka- 3 match T20I series, won 3-0
- India vs Bangladesh- 3 match T20I series, won 3-0
- India vs South Africa- 4 match T20I series, won 3-1
- India vs England- 5 match T20I series, 3 matches still remaining, won first two
SKY has flourished as a leader that nobody could ever think of. Out of 12 matches so far, he has won 11, which takes his winning percentage to 91.66! This stat alone speaks volumes about his calibre to deal with group dynamics.
One of the reasons for his accomplishments is that the management backs every player even during their rough patches. They show complete belief in all the players and that gives the juniors liberty to play their natural game. The environment within the group is so positive that it naturally brings the best foot forward. There is no hint of fear and that is the prime reason why the team members feel secure. Moreover, players are always stepping on the roles assigned to them. There is clarity on what needs to be done and great adaptability is being showcased by other members.
Another reason is that SKY sticks to the plans, he doesn’t rotate much. This algorithm has helped him crack the T20 code and has done wonders for the national team. Interestingly, the graph has gone down in Test and One Day cricket for the past one year. But, it’s the T20 format where the youngsters are winning almost every time they are stepping on the field.
Now, with three matches remaining in the England T20 series, a positive outcome is expected. It is highly possible that Men in blue will whitewash the visitors. After that, the next big assignment for them will be a few bilateral series and ultimately the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held in India. With such form, rhythm and optimistic approach, another title can be clinched!
